Dark Knight (spoilers only behind cut)

Tuesday, 5 August 2008, 9:11

So I saw this last night. Overall quite liked it. I dunno, maybe it was that whatsisname's performance as the Joker had been bigged up, but... eh, he was all right. Interesting mannerisms and things. Not particularly how I see the Joker; for one thing, he hardly did anything funny.

Now, I can see why they might do that, to keep things unrelentingly dark and morbid, but that's the point of the Joker. Inappropriate humour and wacky—in Gotham, for pizzakes, the town that actually has "goth" in its name—that's why the Joker is scary. Clowns are only scary out of context. So Ledger's Joker (and of course, this was mostly the writing, not his performance) was merely chaotic instead of wacky. That made it weaker for me.

Still, I was utterly delighted that his Angsty Backstory™ changed every time he told it. After all, *Deadpoolish pontifical finger-wag* all origin stories should be multiple choice. And the point that he doesn't really have any material motivation was well made. ("Gasoline is cheap"? Hahahaha.)

Now I want to read/reread The Killing Joke. More review, with spoilers, behind the cut...
